Donation to the Starfish Backpack Program

Posted On: November 28, 2019

Women of Oliver for Women Society (WOW) is happy to announce that it has donated $1500 to the Oliver Starfish Backpack Program to provide children with a basic need.  Some children go to school hungry for many unfortunate reasons and also may not have sufficient food over the weekend.  This program will provide the student three meals and snacks per day in a backpack to last the weekend.  Hopefully the children will come to school on Monday feeling better prepared to learn and play as children should.

This beneficial program is organized by Sam Marsel, supported by the Town of Oliver, the Rotary Club and Buy-Low Foods.   WOW’s mission statement is “To enrich the lives of women and children in our community and beyond.”

Healthy Living Fair Hosted on October 19, 2019

Posted On: October 29, 2019

The Healthy Living Fair co-hosted by the town of Oliver, the Oliver Parks and Recreation Department and WOW at the Oliver Community Centre was well attended.

There were twenty-five health based businesses from Oliver, Osoyoos, Rock Creek and surrounding areas that were present to provide information on healthy eating, exercising, blood types, healthy supplements, reflexology, physiotherapy, counselling and much more.  There were presentations done by the Desert Valley Hospice providing information on Advanced Care Planning,  use of Essential Oils by Toes & Nails Wellness, along with a Tai Chi and a drumming demonstration.  Food Secure, sponsored by the Town of Oliver,  had the final opening of the Harvest Hut, which was new this year.  Their motto is “Share what you have, Take what you need”.  They were handing out canned tomatoes with recipes and grown herbs to make salsa, donated onions, potatoes and garlic and provided other health information and contacts.

Door prizes and delicious soup and sandwiches were also enjoyed.

Thank you to all the businesses that were present to help make this fair a success.
