“WOW gives us the opportunity to serve.”
Our family was originally from Manitoba. My grandfather was living in Oliver and described it to us as the “California of the north” and so the family moved from California in 1967. Other than a few short years, I have lived and worked in Oliver, including raising my girls here.
A friend told me about the Soroptimist Club whose goals include “empowering women and girls through education and training to foster independence”. I joined the Soroptimist and later became a founding member of WOW which promoted similar goals to the Soroptimist Club.
During my years in WOW, I have held a variety of positions in the organization, including President, Vice-President, Secretary, Membership Chair, Christmas Auction Chair as well as serving on the Board of Directors.
One of my favourite events is the annual Christmas Auction. This began as a Christmas party for members and migrated to a fund raiser once these opportunities were recognized. The Trade Show is another favourite as it is always evolving with a variety of vendors. Our members come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences which provide lively opportunities for socialization and bonding.
Camping is my “go-to” activity made only better if I have a favourite novel with me. The highlight of many of our trips is being joined by our grandson.
The employment opportunities in Oliver had given me a secure standard of living. I feel it is important to help others have the same opportunities. Paying it forward is an important part of my life. My hope is that more women will realize the positive effects that they can have on other women by becoming a member of WOW, including providing service to the community.
